Event Description:
Business Improvement Districts (BID) emerged in communities around Massachusetts as a way to improve and market and area to the benefit of everyone involved. These organizations step in with improvement projects, marketing, and events that go beyond what the local municipality can offer.

This raises the question: should Newton and/or Needham consider creating a BID to drive economic growth or address infrastructure needs in all or parts of the N-Squared Innovation District?

In this session, we welcome Rosemarie Sansone, who leads the Downtown Crossing BID. It’s touted as one of the most successful BIDs in the state with an annual budget of $4.2 million. She will outline what role the BID plays in the day-to-day business of downtown Boston and what it means for the building owners who pay in to make it run.
We will follow Sansone’s presentation with a panel discussion featuring Emmy Hahn, program coordinator of the Massachusetts Downtown Initiative, who works with BIDs around Massachusetts, and Peter Standish of Northland Development, who serves on the board of several BIDs, including the one in Boston.
