Aquatics Positions: Part-time

The West Suburban YMCA is hiring for part-time positions within our Aquatics department. The YMCA is hiring for part-time positions for lifeguards, swim instructors and swim coaches.  Come be a part of a dynamic, vibrant organization that makes a difference in people's lives on a daily basis!

LIFEGUARD
Flexible Schedule
$13/ hour

POSITION SUMMARY:
Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes camper safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Maintains active surveillance of the pool area.  Be proactive in injury prevention.
  2. Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports (i.e. incident and accident reports) as required in a timely manner.
  3. Must present a professional demeanor in proper uniform.
  4. Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff.
  5. Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the waterfront and aquatic area. Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.
  6. Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
  7. Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving and during shift.
  8. Cleans pool deck area when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action.
  9. Attends all staff meetings and in-service training.
  10. Volunteer at a minimum of ONE YMCA event per year.
  11. Willingness to accept responsibilities and duties other than those assigned.
  12. QUALIFICATIONS:
  13. Minimum age of 16 years old.
  14. Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen. 
  15. Current American Red Cross Lifeguard or equivalent.
  16. Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
  17. Good role model, high integrity and professionalism, and adaptable.
  18. Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  19. PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  20. Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility. Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
  21. Meet strength and lifting requirements.
  22. See and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility. 
SWIM INSTRUCTOR
Flexible Hours
$12/ hour

POSITION SUMMARY:
Provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students in swimming classes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Instructs swim lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines (i.e. keeping swimmers safe, challenged, and actively engaged, maintain a safe swimming environment, and enforcing pool rules & policies), having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
  2. Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourage parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
  3. Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules; and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programs.
  4. Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.)
  5. Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
  6. Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
  7. Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
  8. Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.
  9. Volunteer at a minimum of ONE YMCA event per year.
  10. Willingness to accept responsibilities and duties other than those assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Minimum age of 15.
  2. Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen. 
  3. Must be able to demonstrate all stokes and swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  4. Current American Red Cross Lifeguard, or equivalent preferred.
  5. YMCA Swim Instructor certification, or equivalent preferred.
Physical Demands:
  1. Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke technique.
  2. Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child.
  3. Ability to swim and demonstrate all strokes and skills.
SWIM COACH
POSITION SUMMARY:

Provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for swimmers on swim team. 

Starting at $12/hr

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Coaches and instructs swimmers in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared practices and workouts accordingly.
  2. Builds effective, authentic relationships with swimmers and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourage parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
  3. Conveys information on the swim team, aquatics programs and schedules.
  4. Attends practices and swim meets as required.
  5. Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, swim meet reports, etc.).
  6. Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
  7. Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
  8. Organizes and puts away needed swim team equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
  9. Train and supervise Junior Swim Coaches as assigned.
